3 Simple Habits to Reset Your Day When You’re Feeling Stressed Out
STEP 1: Step Away from the Situation & Change Your “Internal Dialogue”
Becoming aware of your thoughts and emotions is the best way to prevent yourself from snapping at your loved ones due to unchecked stress. When you begin to feel anger and stress rising up inside of you, take a step back from the situation and tune in to your thoughts and emotions. Recognize the thoughts and emotions you’re having in that moment and then consciously make an effort to change your internal dialogue. Check in and ask yourself,'“ Is what I’m about to say kind?" “Is there anything else I can do other than show my frustration and anger to those I love?” and then step back into the situation when you’re feeling calmer.
AT HOME TIP: Don’t be afraid to share with your family and loved ones when you’re feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. Simply let them know they aren’t the problem & you just need a minute of space to collect yourself.
STEP 2: Take a Deep Breathe
After taking a step back and recognizing your thoughts & emotions, take a moment to inhale & exhale a deep breathe. Becoming aware of your breathe is a powerful way to tune in to how your body is feeling & help further recognize those thoughts and feelings causing you to feel stressed out. Take a few deep breathes while you tune in to the different emotions you are having in the moment, and then consciously choose to think differently and de-stress before you resume your day.
STEP 3: Move Your Body
Whether it’s a quick walk around the house, a slight wiggle in your chair, or even dancing by yourself, moving your body will help get those frustrating feelings out of your system. And if nothing else, it’ll make you laugh & that is guaranteed to help boost your mood and shift your attitude in the right direction.
AT WORK TIP: If you’re at work and feeling stressed out about a certain situation, you may not be able to step back physically or go for a walk right away, but you can mentally take a step back, breathe deeply, write out your emotions on paper, or take a minute to go fill your water bottle to reset and shift your negative energy into something more positive.
