Did you know emotions are simply ‘energy in motion’? After a year of working from home and learning to develop projects and share new ideas with colleagues through a computer screen, I’ve come to an even deeper understanding of how our emotional energy plays a huge part in creating a happy & healthy life. While initially adjusting to a work-from-home schedule with 5 children at home as well, I found myself experiencing less and less energy over time …
“Energy” is the capacity to do work & since energy cannot be destroyed, it involves the process of transfer from one body to another.
In this week’s blog & podcast episode, I’m going to dive deeper into the emotional energy we all experience and how to develop your emotional intelligence through a simple everyday practice that will increase your level of joy and decrease your feelings of fear and frustration - even if you’re still working with less-than-ideal circumstances.
What is Emotional Intelligence? (& How to Develop It in the Workplace)
What is Emotional Energy (& Emotional Intelligence)?
Emotions are energy. “Emotion” is the term we use for the experience of energy moving through the body.
Simply put, our emotions are ‘energy in motion’.
Since we know from the study of physics, the law of conservation of energy states energy cannot be destroyed, it’s important to note that energy can only be transformed.
So, therefore, as energetic human beings, we cannot create energy, we simply transform it from one form to another. Your energy cannot get tired, old, or even need food. You need openness of expansion to allow your energy to work through you as it should. However, as a result of the human condition, we tend to close down and stop this energy from flowing - especially when we experience negative emotions.
I think our modern culture has lost its ability to properly understand emotions and connect the mind & body together.
Your emotional intelligence and how you choose to take action (or not to take action) each day are the result of the choices YOU make.
Your emotions are neither good nor bad, they are neutral. The choices we make to either identify and process these emotions throughout the day or stuff these emotions down in an attempt to keep up with the go, go, go pace of modern culture will determine our level of joy and happiness as well as our level of emotional intelligence.
The only person in control of your emotional energy is YOU.
If you don’t take note and reflect on your swiftly changing emotions throughout the day, you will unknowingly be sharing these emotions and their emotional energy with others around you.
The concept of emotional energy excites me as it bridges the gap between my “day job” as a doctorate-level electrical engineer working in the field of energy & my passion project where I continuously study the mind-body connection and the effects of increased awareness of thoughts and emotions on our ability to create a happy & healthy life.
If we are surrounded by people of high energy, we can quite literally feel the energy coming out from within them. So how do we bring about this same level of high energy and positive emotions within ourselves, so we can bring it forth to others?
If you tune into your emotions throughout the day and pay close attention to the sensations you feel in your body as you experience different emotions, you will start to notice how emotions of joy, love, and happiness being about lightness and openness in your body, whereas emotions of fear, anger, and resentment will bring about tension and contracting in your body. Our physical bodies connect with the motion of energy within our bodies.
Therefore, I believe the only reason we don’t feel this emotional connection to our bodies on a deeper level is that we simply don’t allow ourselves space to feel these emotions. If we don’t allow ourselves the space to feel these emotions, we are unable to identify and then properly process and release these emotions in order to magnify the open energy and redirect (or transform) the negative energy.
How do we bring this understanding of emotional energy into everyday life (& the workplace)?
Our emotional energy is consistently being monitored and signaled by our nervous system and our bodies natural desire is to be happy and come to a place of equilibrium.
In order to achieve this place of equilibrium, we need to identify and release our emotions, both positive and negative. It takes practice to learn how to be fully present in any given moment and intelligently process our everyday emotions (both negative and positive) and then consciously make the choice of how to connect with these emotions and take that next step forward.
We all have 24 hours in a day, but oftentimes these 24 hours doesn’t feel like “enough” time to get everything done. In our modern culture, it’s easy to feel like we are in a constant state of catch up. You need to change your inner dialogue and believe in the knowledge that YOU have the power to consciously choose how you want to respond to the craziness of the outside world and the demands it continuously tries to place upon you.
By beginning an emotional awareness practice in your everyday life, you can begin understanding your emotions without judging them & start to truly find what brings you joy. Learning to slow down and become aware of your emotional energy will allow you to proactively begin to create the happy & healthy life you’ve always imagined living, rather than simply living by default.
Every moment allows you an opportunity to learn more about yourself.
Regardless of your age or stage in life, if you are not clear on who you are or what you want, the direction of your life will become nothing more than a random assortment of events that are at the mercy of other people’s agendas. However, you have the power to CHOOSE and you can begin to manifest and create a vision for your life.
Harness the power of emotional intelligence and use your emotional energy as a force for good in this world.
Imagine what we can do together if we all can tap into the high vibrancy of energy that thrives when one moves and chooses from a source of love?
