Did you know JOY can be one of the most difficult feelings for us as humans to properly process? When I think back on my life and the road that led me to the level of success & joy that I have learned to obtain simultaneously, I am filled with gratitude for all the blessings that I’ve been given. I have great respect and honor for the road that led me to where I am today, and as I wrote inside my book Reflective Awareness, I feel immense gratitude to my parents for the love and support that they continuously gave me as they raised me and my two brothers.
The environment of love & growth my parents fostered for me as I was growing up allowed me to discover my inner strength while instilling in me various life lessons that have helped shape me into who I am today. These life lessons have allowed me to travel the road to success which have led me to live a life full of joy and purpose as I now work as a high-powered engineer in the male-dominated industry of engineering while I simultaneously earned my doctorate degree & continue to raise 6 beautiful children alongside my loving husband. In this week’s blog post & video episode, I want to share 7 of those joy-filled life lessons that I am grateful to have learned from my parents about finding joy in both career and personal life.
7 Life Lessons I’ve Learned About Finding Joy in Both Career & Personal Life
Trust that you will succeed.
My parents always trusted that I would succeed and they never doubted my abilities in doing so. Give yourself this same level of trust and believe that you will find success on your unique journey and in your own timing.
Believe in yourself & know that you can be whoever you want to be.
My parents not only believed in my abilities, but they also let me know that I could be whoever I wanted to be. Don’t let the world taint your innate beauty and your unique heart for the things you love. Believe in yourself & allow yourself to truly step into your power as you continually discover who you were meant to be.
Lead with your heart.
Lead with your heart & lead with love.
Above all else, love.
Lead with love & use the power of gratitude and awareness to come into a greater understanding of who you are and how you can love yourself and, therefore everyone else around you, even deeper.
Keep your agreements & honor your commitments.
My parents instilled in me a moral sense of right and wrong from a very young age & keeping my agreements and honoring my commitments was a transformative practice they taught me. Begin to earn trust with yourself by keeping your agreements and honoring even the smallest commitments you make to yourself this week. If you said you were going to write down 3 things you are grateful for every morning, then keep your journal & pen by your bedside and follow through.
Know that your mind can be your own worst enemy.
We all know that our minds can be our own worst enemy at times, but we don’t always know how to combat these negative thought loops and emotions. Use the gratitude practice below to begin changing the conversation inside your subconscious mind & bring greater awareness to the positive and joyful experience of your everyday life.
Be open and true throughout all your life interactions.
My parents fostered an environment of love and support throughout my childhood that allowed me to feel safe and seen, allowing me to feel confident in being open and true throughout all my life interactions. Practice this same level of openness and honesty in your life by starting to honor your commitments to yourself and building a stronger level of trust that you will indeed follow through when you say you will.
Try This Gratitude Practice for More Joy in Your Everyday Life:
Every morning write down 3 things you are grateful for to start your day on a positive note.
Throughout the day, attention to the little (& big) things that you are grateful for as they happen throughout the day.
At the end of the day, recall 3 things that you’re grateful for that happened throughout the day.
Use this Daily Gratitude Practice to foster more joy in your everyday life by bringing awareness to the positive thoughts and emotions you have throughout the day that may have gone unnoticed or underappreciated before.
