Focus on what unites you with others, not what divides you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your never-ending to-do list and unsure how to bring more clarity to your busy life and schedule these days, then free writing may be a good option to consider. I’m sharing how I use free writing to clear my mind, de-stress my thoughts, and organize my busy schedule for a more productive and more peaceful week.
How to Use Free Writing to Clear Your Mind & Organize Your Busy Schedule
At the beginning of each week, release your thoughts through the process of free writing outlined below.
STEP #1 Grab a Pen & Paper
Get a pen and paper and allot yourself a specific amount of time – usually, five to 10 minutes is sufficient – and let all of your thoughts out by free writing.
STEP #2 Write Down Every Thought You Have
Collect every single thought that comes to mind, whether it’s something that you’re grateful for, happy about, or stressing over and write it down. Don’t bother trying to self-edit or organize your thoughts; the point is the catharsis that comes with putting pen to paper, giving you time to reflect on what’s bringing you joy and relieving your mind of the burden of the hard things you’re facing.
The result should be a stream of consciousness that grounds you in whatever you’re going through that given week.
STEP #3 Write Down Everything You Need To Do For The Week
This also a way to keep track of everything you have to do, and I mean everything. Write down any paperwork you need to complete, gifts you need to buy, the errands you need to run, the meals you’ll make, and the groceries you’ll have to get. Everything you need to get done should be on the list.
STEP #4 Fill in Your Calendar
It’s likely to be a long list – even while we’re all staying at home and have fewer places we need to physically be, it’s a busy time as we juggle parenting, careers, and relationships all at once. Staying organized is critical right now. The next step is to fill in your calendar. I print out weekly calendar pages to help me plan out my weeks.
Taking the time to write down what you’re thinking, what you’re feeling, and what you need to do will allow you to clear your mind and get better clarity and organization around your busy week ahead. Sure, we may be able to record these to-do lists in our phones and schedule our week’s events in Google calendars, but physically writing things down helps clarify everything in your mind. That clarity may be what you needed to get your productivity jump started & bring a sense of peace to your busy week ahead.
