Knowing that our lifestyle choices (that are driven by our behavior) account for over half of the risk of early death, what we do every single day matters. We tend to live in a society that believes “It’s just one day of bad eating…” “I’ll start on Monday…” “Well, it’s the weekend…” Over the past several years I’ve come to understand the deep impact that what I put in & on my body has on my daily energy levels. With all of the responsibilities & to-do’s on my list, it became a must for me to better understand how to use nutrition to better energize my body, mind, & spirit. Today on the blog & podcast, I’m going to dive deeper into the idea that “we are what we eat” & how to use food to optimize the quality of your overall health & wellbeing.
Am I Eating Enough? 3 Steps to Counting Macros to Find the Answer
When it comes to defining your personal diet & lifestyle, what you eat should always come back to what makes you feel good. Let’s break down a few factoids to better understand the power of proper nutrition on your overall health & wellbeing.
#1 Understanding Your Endocrine System
Your endocrine system is constantly reading, reviewing, and assessing the way you are living your life - including the way you break down food & then get energy from those nutrients. This same system drives our emotions & mood, our sexual function, our ability to sleep, and our blood pressure. By understanding the concept that what we put in our system via food will either fuel or harm these processes, it’s easy to see the power that choosing proper nutrients, supplements, & whole foods have on your overall wellbeing.
#2 Assessing Your Macronutrients
Macronutrients are the protein, fats, & carbohydrates that make up each type of food you eat every day. As you begin to study and assess the amount of each macronutrient you are consuming each day, you will begin to crave the proper amount of each and lessen the processed & sugar-filled foods you may have once eaten regularly.
#3 Creating Daily Habits
Dr. Mark Hyman quotes Wendell Berry as having said, “People are fed by the food industry which pays no attention to health and are healed by the health industry that tapy no attention to food.” We know that sugar is bad for us, yet we keep eating it. Did you know sugar is biologically addictive to us? We know that salmon is healthy for us, yet how often do we eat it? Take a minute to step back & reexamine the types of food you’re eating regularly & take small steps to eat more of the healthy foods that your body enjoys & you will naturally eat less & less of the unhealthy foods we know we shouldn't be eating.
