With 86 billion neurons in the brain & 1000 connections per neuron, it’s important that we are giving our brains proper rest. We know the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected, but we may not realize the unhealthy sleep habits that have crept into our lives. Today on the blog & podcast, I’m sharing 5 sleep tips to keep your brain healthy. Let’s get a quick reminder that sleep habits matter & learn ways to start logging the right amount of zzz’s, so we can find a flow of life that allows us to get enough sleep to wake up feeling refreshed!
5 Sleep Tips to Keep Your Brain Healthy
#1 Eliminate Caffeine in the Evening
Caffeine takes 8 hours to clear your body. Skip the afternoon coffee & try drinking a cup of hot water with a few drops of lemon in the evening.
#2 Dim the Lights
Be cognizant of the lighting of your home in the evening. Try no bright lights before bed to help body optimize the release of melatonin. Dim your overhead slights or use other lighting sources after 8 pm.
#3 Set the Stage
Set the stage for where you’ll sleep - dark, cool, and quiet. Create an sleeping environment in your bedroom that indicates to your brain the space is for sleep only.
#4 Ditch the Devices
Ditch the devices before bed. Blue light exposure from your phone, tablet, or tv can interfere with proper rest and release of melatonin. Better yet, keep your phone out of the bedroom during the evening hours.
#5 Alcohol Doesn’t Create Sound Sleep
Alcohol doesn’t create sound sleep, it actually does the opposite. It takes about 3 hours for alcohol to get out of your system. Some people may think alcohol can help get better sleep, but it actually limits your ability to get into a deep REM sleep cycle, which is important for the most restorative sleep!
