What does trust mean to you? I consistently show up on the blog and podcast to delve into the interconnection between mind, body, & spirit. I share various ways we can tap into our joy and our best selves in order to show up, connect, and live holistically. Across all areas of my life as a mother, wife, and electrical engineer, I have seen the impact and importance of healthy relationships. Relationships bring deeper meaning and fulfillment to our lives. Trust is the invisible thread of relationships that binds us all together, but what do you do when that trust is broken? Sometimes in a society that likes to make things overly complex, we can easily lose the ability to connect with each other in a safe space. Today on the blog & podcast, I’m sharing 5 tips for how to rebuild the trust that has been broken. Whether in a personal, familial, or business relationship, these steps will help to bring clarity in moving forward and rebuilding the relationship one step at a time.
How to Rebuild Trust That Has Been Broken (In Any Relationship)
#1 Acknowledge Emotions
Begin by acknowledging the emotions that arise when trust is broken. Really allow yourself to reflect on the emotions that come up for you and let yourself process them in your own way and on your own timeline. This may be an ugly and sticky process but it’s important to let yourself feel these emotions in order to walk through to the other side.
#2 Allow Honest & Open Communication
It’s important to realize that communication has to be open and honest from both sides where trust was broken in order to begin rebuilding the relationship. Share openly yourself and take an active listening role when the other person is sharing with you. Active listening means listening without thinking about how you're going to respond but instead listening to understand and asking questions as needed.
#3 Take Care of Your Physical Health
The mental stress of trust being broken can have a profound impact on your physical health. Tie yourself back to a nutrient-rich diet, proper hydration, and prioritize your overall physical health and gut microbiome to aid in the trust-rebuilding process. Fun Fact: There are 9x more neural connections from your gut than your brain, so taking care of your gut will have a significant impact on your mental health.
#4 Tap Into Mindfulness
Being mindful and tapping into meditation practices will help you find ways to connect and center yourself. This will also allow you to find a space of deep calm and peace and open yourself up to the ability to forgive while working through this process on your own timeline.
#5 Connect with Your Core Values
Finally, connect with your values and better understand your core beliefs. These values and beliefs will guide your actions as you work to rebuild trust in the relationship. Love. Respect. Trust. What do these words mean to you & how can this realization propel you forward?
