Never lose sight of the divine in yourself and others.
"I am too busy." This has never been something I found myself saying, and now more than ever, I find myself avoiding the sentiment altogether. When I have a lot going on in my life, I turn inward to something I have been doing for 20 years.
I reflect on what my actual steps are to keep me motivated and moving forward.
One constant thread in my life has been the ability to set a goal no matter how big or how small. Then I make it happen. As I continue to set new goals, it brings on new growth and perspective. A lot of the goals I set lead me down paths I never imagined, which makes me grateful and excited about what door will open next.
If I ever feel like I'm too busy, sitting with my thoughts grounds me, gives me clarity, and brings me joy as I enter my fourth decade. Here are some habits I have formed over the years to help me prioritize – habits I've formed without even realizing the impact each change in my daily routine and thoughts would have.
10 Daily Habits to Prioritize Your Life As a Working Mom
Stay aware of my thoughts at all times
Drink a lot of water
Journal each morning
Set my intentions every day to accomplish my top three goals
Practice non-attachment to any ideas or plans
Identify what brings me great joy
Speak to lovingly myself
Find a planner I love and write down all scheduled dates
Say yes to what I love and no to what I don't
Write down the five things I am grateful for each day before bed
These small steps bring clarity to my life every day. I show up for myself consistently and structure my thoughts the same way. To prioritize my busy schedule, I do the following for all aspects of my life home, mothering, work, and school:
6 Steps to Put These 10 Daily Habits into Action
1. Brain dump: Collect a list of all your tasks
Pull together everything you believe you need to get done. I do not worry about the order or the number of items upfront.
2. Identify what's urgent
The next step is to see if I have any tasks that need my immediate attention. (think: missed deadlines).
3. Assess value.
I look at my essential work and identify what carries the highest value to my business, my organization, or my goals. Are other people impacted by my work product?
4. Order tasks by estimated effort.
Some days I tackle the most critical items first. Other days I select the more checkable or available items. I choose how to approach the day by assessing my mood and my cycles, and by being aware that I know myself best.
5. Be flexible and adaptable.
Uncertainty and change will always be are given. Know that your priorities will change, and often when you least expect them to.
6. Know when to cut.
I know I probably can't get to everything on my list, but that is when I take a deep breath, dive in, and be ready for anything.
So when you feel overwhelmed, remember that prioritizing your tasks, trusting your instincts, and checking in with yourself makes anything manageable.
