What are your New Year’s goals? As the New Year unfolds, many of us reflect on the past and set intentions for the future. But have you ever paused to explore the philosophy behind those intentions? Philosophy isn’t just for scholars; it’s about the love of wisdom and how we integrate that wisdom into our daily lives. My approach to wellness focuses on unlocking joy and creating purposeful connections between the mind, body, and spirit. In today’s blog & podcast episode, let’s dive into what embracing philosophy as a way of life looks like.
Embracing the Term "Philosophy"
A Love for Wisdom and Life Learning
What Is Philosophy?
At its core, philosophy means the “love of wisdom.” It’s about exploring past, present, and future perspectives and using those insights to inform our actions. It invites us to lean into life as learners, questioning our beliefs, habits, and systems to grow meaningfully.
A conversation with my nephew highlighted the importance of this concept. He once told me, “You’re not a doctor because you’re not a medical doctor.” This sparked a dialogue about my doctorate in philosophy, not in the traditional sense of medicine, but as an exploration of wisdom in electrical engineering. This love for learning and understanding shapes our lives and allows us to thrive.
Life Learning: Beyond the Classroom
Our education system often emphasizes structured learning—reading, writing, and arithmetic. While valuable, it’s only the beginning. Life learning expands beyond these confines. It’s about creating a space for curiosity and exploration. In my household, I encourage my children to lean into their interests, challenge themselves, and embrace learning as a lifelong process. For instance, when one of my kids finds history “boring,” we explore why they feel that way and uncover new perspectives.
Philosophy in Practice: Everyday Wisdom
Philosophy isn’t abstract; it’s practical. It helps us pause, reflect, and ask:
Why do I react this way?
What can I learn from this moment?
How can I contribute meaningfully to my community?
By practicing intentional reflection, we uncover growth opportunities. Whether navigating a challenging conversation, finding joy in mundane tasks, or questioning societal expectations, philosophy empowers us to align with our values.
Five Practical Takeaways
Purposeful Connections: Surround yourself with those who uplift and inspire you.
Focus on Positivity: Choose actions rooted in thoughtfulness and genuine optimism.
Lean Into Moments: Embrace the present with an open mind, finding growth in every experience.
Commit to Reflection: Regularly evaluate your actions and intentions to stay aligned with your values.
Embrace Life Learning: Treat every experience as an opportunity to grow, learn, and evolve.
Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements offers practical principles that align beautifully with the philosophy of integrated being:
Be Impeccable with Your Word: Speak with integrity. Use language to uplift yourself and others.
Don’t Take Anything Personally: Recognize that others’ words and actions reflect their own experiences, not your judgment.
Don’t Make Assumptions: Seek clarity and avoid misunderstandings by asking questions.
Always Do Your Best: Strive to give your best effort daily, knowing that “your best” may vary based on circumstances.
Living with Intentionality
Philosophy teaches us to find joy in the every day and wisdom in the mundane. It’s not about achieving perfection but embracing life as a journey of discovery. By being intentional, reflective, and open to growth, we can align our actions with our greater purpose. So, as we navigate this year, let’s lean into the love of wisdom, build meaningful connections, and create a life that truly resonates.
Until next time, embrace the journey.
