What is in your control? We all grow up believing in specific systems and institutions. As I navigate raising teenage children while caring for aging parents, I’m struck with the reality of our current culture’s changes. From resilience and transformation to the pursuit of joy amidst uncertainty, in this episode of Integrated Being I draw on insights from Ryan Holiday's Daily Stoic and Sahil Bloom's framework on wealth in 5 Types of Wealth to share five practical tips for navigating uncertainty while finding joy in everyday moments.
5 Practical Tips for Finding Joy Amidst Uncertainty
#1 What is in your control?
We can’t control all things and people around us. We only control ourselves and the actions we take. Stability is found in how you respond to the external systems and events around you, not in the events or systems themselves.
#2 Financial wealth is not the only measure of security.
Wealth is more than financial. Your relationships, time, and energy are also measures of a well-lived life. Your life is a collection of many aspects and it’s important to find joy in building a life that accounts for the many aspects of who you are.
#3 Misinformation is rampant.
The power of discernment is crucial to finding joy through times of uncertainty. Instead of telling others what to believe or letting ourselves be told what to believe, we can ask good questions, consider the sources, and challenge all narratives. Separate emotion from fact. It’s not necessarily an event that upsets us, it’s our reaction to it.
#4 Encourgae outside-the-box thinkers.
Traditional institutions are unstable and we need creative thinkers to find new paths forward. Encourage young people to see the world through their lenses and develop creative ideas for current problems and issues.
#5 Find joy in the small moments.
Joy exists in every situation, if you look for it. Bring awareness to the present moment and you’ll begin to see the beauty in the smallest moments with those you love.
